Hi everyone thanks for stopping by,

I made it to the Biometrics show, it was held in the QE2 conference hall which is massive and has an amazing view over Parliament square....

Dr-K came arround to do an interview with me for his new book Hackers' Tales.... I am looking forward to Friday, fireworks first and the London 2600 meeting straight after it.... :-)) The WiFi is up and running in Leicester square, it`s a nice fat 10mb connection

A poster that amused me

Hi everyone thanks for stopping by,

I made it to the Biometrics show, it was held in the QE2 conference hall which is massive and has an amazing view over Parliament square,

The show was quite small and most were flogging fingerprint recognition systems, some of the docs I got were more entertaining than the show as in once you have heard one sales pitch you have near enough heard them all.

I spent a day moving all my computers about and rerouting all the cables, it was worth it as I have more space and a rather large suplus collection of power leads that had been abandoned in inaccessable places....
-----------

The lamposts have been taken away and the holes filled in, we all are hoping they will replace the lampost as it is on a dark corner.
-----------

Dr-K came arround to do an interview with me for his new book Hackers' Tales and chat about the old days...we moved in similar circles and knew some of the same people as each other, a few drinks later and he had to catch the train back home...(I hope you caught it) :-)

I am looking forward to Friday, fireworks first and the London 2600 meeting straight after it.... :-))

A lesson I have just learnt....
A few months ago I found an Inkjet printer and it sat on the table untill a couple of days ago, I stripped the thing down and cleaned it out and checked it mechanically,
It looked healthy so I plugged it in....

It went pop and white smoke that changed to red was pouring out of it, so I blasted it with Co2 and pulled the plug out at the same time, it stopped smoking and the air cleared, so had a look at why this had happened,
Duh..it was 120 volt and I didn`t even look at that when plugging in, like who ? in an English office uses 120 volt equipment ?
In future I will check...once bitten twice shy.
-----------

The WiFi is up and running in Leicester square, it`s a nice fat 10mb connection and it`s free, the company that owns it are donating it as part of a publicity stunt.

Well I think thats it for now....off to Leicester square and put this blog online :-)

I think that you should WarChalk the free Leicester Square WiFi internet connection being provided by the LondonTown.com listings/tourist info service.

WarChalking is not a crime!

If it is public then it shouldn't need chalking - should be made clear anyway.

Not even BT Openzone or other commercial WiFi hotspots could put up enough signs up to cover the areas of Leicester Square which the WiFi signals reach. It is unlikely that anyone would get planning permission, let alone be able to compete with the neon and advertising from the cinemas etc.

If you have your WiFi enabled laptop or PDA switched on then it is obvious that the free hotspot is just that, but the whole point of WarChalking is to let people know that the area so marked (in a non-permanent fashion) may be worth the effort of switching on your equipment in the first place.

Point taken - but War Chalking is a bit of a secret language for the indoctrinated - bit obscure for the layperson, who might still have a wireless card in her laptop.

People setting up hot-spots should take responsibility for publicising them clearly - otherwise they aren't really doing the great service they might like to thing.

War chalking can compliment this for the techies.

I am talking public hotspots here, not concealed business ones. I thought that was the point of war chalking...

Hi,
I am going to chalk the site but I am trying to work out where the best place to put the mark as there is a good signal all round...when it`s working :-P
As it is a connection donated free of charge and is for publicity all I am doing is drawing them more custom.
+:-)

hi,
I am the aforesaid layperson that g might have been talking about previously- a) i live in Leicester Sq, b) I have an airport equipped apple powerbook, c) i have no knowledge of wi-fi as i only use my 56k modem. can you tell me where this hotspot is and is it any use to me?
Cheers
Kenny
